'Hearts'

Children of the ocean; welled up rain,
their waves welcomed from the opposite side of the road;
the side with a hospital and shops.
People were standing: wingless, worrying.
Like they were on ledges.
And I watched as the machines beat
again and again against the water;
flooding my side of the road.

"...a permanent fixture...," I find myself recalling, smiling
as I stood, still against the bustling background
made of foreigners, strangers
as you made your way to me...

Warmth: warmth away for too long
and yet: all those yesterdays spent waiting seemed distant
in that One moment that really mattered.
(Our hands: yours small, meek; mine plastered.)

And later: We turned to the outside world,
night time in the heart of the city,
traces still of the earlier downpour; obstacles conquered in fragments
Only to find ourselves in front of the intended destination: closed
but I said, "At least we know where it is."

We moved as One; Alive:
with you, I retraced the (old) steps to the places of my youth
with you (I said): Anywhere.
