'Beautiful Junk 2005 (A Pseudo-review / Delayed Opinion)'

Well, after little thought, my supposed plans of blogging on last weekends' Penang Gig, 'Beautiful Junk 2005' is materialising, but only a portion of it has made the last cut. The original draft was way too long, and after reading it myself, quite tiring and monotonous. So let's just have some pics with minimal insights.

Well basically the gig/art exhibition as shown above and below (friends commented the usage of makeshift building platforms as 'frames' was a brilliant idea from the organisers, minimal cost and it looked 'artsy', hehe). The pieces were good and consisted of art from all over the place, a few countries contributed to the exhibits.

Also, they had art/crafts/comics/shirt/music stalls setup right outside the room where the bands played. Dewan Sri Pinang was a place of protocol. They didn't have smoking in there. Pete Teo commented on stage about that and i agreed in laughter (Yeah, Pete if you are coincidentally reading this, i was the guy who was lounging outside and had a brief chat with you, the dude dressed all in black with office hair), a gig w/o smoking is a lifeless place, nevermind the crowd was already as self counscious and prudent that it dampened a lot of the bands that played that day. Sorry to say this guys but it was just so wrong to sit down and stare.

Now Uglymen (Don't ask), the veteran Penang rockers did a very right thing, they asked the people to stand, and they played a great set. Chinese dialects and double guitar solos. For that to happen anywhere, it's like seeing a comet on a night with a blue moon. I'd say my picks of the day were:

  1. Uglymen (Penang, Chinese Rock/Metal Outfit)
  2. Damn Dirty Apes (Penang, supposedly defunct but one of the original members brought some friends along and made, uhm....'space reggae', it was real stoner music (self opinion) and i enjoyed it much... ;-)
  3. Nao (KL/Selangor, Chinese Political Experimental/Progressive Jazz/Rock/Hardcore, 'nough said, bought their EP but their live is seriously the bomb, wish i had the chance to see them play more often, but for a band from KL to be in Penang AND playin', it's what i call a miracle...)

My break (try watching over 10 bands play from 12 noon, it's crazy...) accidentally went too long and i came back in time for one and a 1/2 songs to Seven Collar T-shirt's ending performance. Damn. Live they're great, these guys have been here in the scene a long time. Ending song they played 'The War is Over', my memory ain't so good, it could be titled something else. Anyways notice the hair dryer at the bottom right corner of the pic?, it was used in the finale. They ended the gig 20 minutes early from midnight.

"So what's it feel like to be near a Tofu Car that made fictional racing/drifting anime history?"

"It feels like it looks; akward"

Had supper before going back and calling it a day. The Digi company was promoting Initial-D the movie and why not snap a pic with THE car. Haha, childish but hey, it was fun for about 2 minutes. Thanks for coming down to Penang dudes: 30210162, B and FH.
